Alienware 15 R3 Review- Including the NVIDIA GTX 10 series

May 4, 2017 by Shrey Leave a Comment

Alienware 15 is one of the most amazing laptops out there and since Alienware has revamped all its laptops after the release of the new NVIDIA GTX 10 series, these revamped laptops are way too good for gaming. And the best part is that these laptops cost as much and sometimes even less than the Alienware 13 laptops on Amazon.

They are way affordable than the previous versions and hence being a better investment than the Alienware 13, without any further ado let’s get into the specifications of the laptop along with the detailed complete review.

Design and Display

The laptop comes with a silver finish on the top along with the Alienware logo and the corners of the laptop light up like two flashlights which is pretty impressive. There are the typical three angled lines on the cover, giving it the typical Alienware gaming laptop feel. This laptop is one of the best laptops when you consider the Alienware design and this one is seriously lit from all the corners.

The display is 1080p with 300 nits and has an amazing color accuracy. The display quality is pretty amazing for gamers and it definitely brings out all the details that are required in different gaming titles. The laptop screen at maximum brightness can go really bright and the color contrast can be changed anytime according to your needs.

The laptop size is reduced by 25 percent in comparison to the previous Alienware 15 laptop which was pretty heavy and better off at a desk. The new Alienware laptop is relatively portable and you can easily use it and travel with it.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard of all the Alienware laptops is pretty lit and the one in this laptop is amazing as well. The keyboard has zones where you could decide the color of the backlighting and the travel is around 2mm which makes it a really good keyboard for typing. I think the resistance offered by the keys is really good making it an excellent choice for someone who has a lot of typing to do.

The strong chassis makes it an excellent keyboard for all the gamers out there and it has a really strong base, so strong that I doubt anything would probably happen even if you drop it down(please do not try that). The conclusion here is that the laptop has a pretty solid built quality.

The touchpad is awesome and I personally love Dell touchpads. The one here lights up and you can decide the color of your choice for the touchpad. The bright colors look really amazing and apart from the looks, the quality of the touchpad is pretty great. It is precise and accurate which makes getting used to the touchpad really easy.

Gaming and Graphics

The laptop is available with two different graphics card options and you can choose them depending on your budget. You have an option between the NVIDIA GTX 1060 and the NVIDIA GTX 1070, so choosing between them depends on your budget and requirements.

Both the graphics card makes the laptop VR ready and you can easily use it with your VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. However, unlike gaming PCs, you cannot change the graphics card in the laptop so make sure which one you prefer.

The NVIDIA GTX 1070 will definitely give you a better performance in comparison to the GTX 1060 but the one I’m currently reviewing is the GTX 1060 so let’s talk more about the power of this graphics card. The NVIDIA GTX 1060 can easily run games on ultra setting and maximum display resolution for lighter games.

In the case of lighter games the frame rate is around 100 fps and in the case of the demanding games it is around 60 fps which are pretty good, however, you might want to play on the high settings in the case of the graphics demanding games.

The laptop comes with 16 GB RAM  and the storage is 256GBSSD+ 1 TB HDD options. You can choose the required storage and RAM combinations depending on your budget and this makes the laptop price wander in the range $1,099- $1,800. The storage and the graphics card will determine the price for the laptop but even the laptop with GTX 1060 and 8 GB RAM comes for $1,099 which is a pretty good value for a gaming laptop.

Battery and Overheating Issues

The Alienware laptops have a pretty good battery life and the one on the Alienware 15 can easily last for 7 hours when Idle. While watching movies and videos online, it could last for 5 hours and the battery time would go down while playing games depending on the settings.

The laptop can heat up depending on the usage of the graphics card and the load on the laptop. When under maximum load the temperatures can soar on the left side of the laptop closer to the screen. However, the temperature will not slow down the laptop or create any interference in your work and you need to use it for a really long period of time to see your system slow up due to overheating issues.

Ports on the laptop

Alienware laptops have quite a lot of ports and they are pretty good as gaming laptops since you need them while connecting to other devices. On the left side of the laptop, you have the Noble lock, USB 3.0 Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, microphone, headphones jack. The rear side of the laptop contains ports like the LAN, Mini-DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 2.0, Thunderbolt 3, Graphics Amplifier and charging port.

The right side of the laptop has a USB 3.0 Type-A port.

Conclusion

The Alienware 15 is a really powerful laptop and it comes for a really great price. The laptop is VR ready(try going for the 16 GB memory) and is definitely going to give you the best gameplay experience ever. It is one of the best laptops that you could possibly use for gaming and apart from the weight of the laptop, there are no setbacks for this laptop.

The laptop is powerful and compact and has a lower price tag than the previous Alienware laptops. The Alienware 15 laptop has a much better specs, performance and price /feature balance than the Alienware 13 laptops and that is the reason you should consider buying this.

The Alienware 13 has good specs and it is smaller but both of them end up weighing the same. The Alienware 15 seems like a much better option. Go ahead and check out the product on amazon.
