September 5, 2016 by Shrey Leave a Comment

This laptop series has to be one of my favorites because it features the new GTX 1070 which according to many reports might be Nvidia’s best selling GPU. This laptop is VR ready, so if you are planning to buy a laptop to use it with your VR headset then this laptop will be something you want to look at.So, without any further ado lets get into the specifications followed by the detailed review.

Design and Display

The laptop has a black metallic brush finish on the cover and looks really sleek and visually appealing. The cover sports the fighter inspired look and the angled lines which glow up and the logo sits beautifully between the two angled lines making  the overall look of this laptop is amazing.

The laptop looks like a nice gaming laptop but the looks are not as good as the Razer or Alienware laptops. It weighs around 4.9 pounds and that makes it ready for gaming on the go. The laptop has a screen resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and has a 160 degrees wide view panel which lets you view the screen perfectly without any color shifts even in extreme positions.

The display is just brilliant and when it gets teamed up with the gaming hardware, this laptop is a complete package and does give a strong fight to all the other gaming laptops out there.

Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard in this laptop is very comfortable and the backlit keys look really nice and it makes it easier to use the keyboard when the lights are dim. Apart from the usual backlit keyboard, the W, A, S, D, keys in this laptop are entirely red and that makes them pop out  from the rest of the keys even when the entire keyboard is lit. It does include a number pad as well and that makes the touchpad in this laptop a little more aligned towards the left which is still ‘okayish’ because it has a lot of room left apart from  the keyboard area.

The touchpad is good and extremely sensitive, so I do not have any complaints about it, well it is more or less perfect and has a good feature/price balance.

Audio and Webcam

The audio in this laptop is powered by ASUS SonicMaster Technology and to be honest, the speakers are pretty much similar to the ROG gaming laptops by Asus in this range. However, it isn’t that bad but it is neither as great as the Alienware laptops which have top notch Audio quality.

The laptop has a 1.2MP camera which is something I found common in most of the gaming laptops in this range,so the laptop can be used to record HD quality videos. Overall, the camera is good, though these two features are not the unique selling point for this laptop and I think they should try and improve them to make this VR ready laptop really stand out in all the features.

Gaming and Graphics

This is the unique selling point of the laptop! The brand new NVIDIA Ge-Force GTX 1070 which is like the graphics card of 2016 and was specially made for the PC VR headsets. I really liked that Asus included this in theROG series for the given price range.

This laptop can easily run graphics hungry games like GTA 5 and Rise of tomb Raider at 60-65 fps in ultra settings which is something really unique and makes it worth all that money you are spending on this VR Ready gaming laptop. It will play all the games at ease with the high end graphics card it has been powered with.

The storage of this laptop is equally great which includes 256 GB SSD making it super fast and the 1TB HDD makes room for enough storage. The RAM is upgradeable to 32GB which makes this laptop specifications something you can drool over.

The performance of this laptop is amazing and you can do multi-tasking with ease. Along with all the storage space and the high specs included in this, there is no need to back up my comment when I say that the performance of this laptop is “way too good !”.

Battery Life and Overheating Issues

The battery life in this laptop is not that great though I must say I would still go ahead and buy this laptop because I’m in love with the other specs. The battery lasts for about 5 hours when used normally for browsing, while gaming, the battery will last for about 2 hours and hence it is better to use it with charger always plugged in while gaming.

The laptop does not heat up as much as a few other gaming laptops, however, it totally depends on the way you use it.Continous 7-10 hours of gaming will make it a little warm but even then not unusually hot such that you would feel like shutting down the laptop so that you can give it some rest.

Ports

The ports included in this laptop are 1 x Microphone-in/Headphone-out jack , 1 x USB 3.1 TYPE C port(s), 3 x USB 3.0 port(s) RJ45LAN Jack for LAN insert,1 x HDMI , 1 x mini Display Port, 1 x micro SDXC card reader and an AC adapter plug.It does have way too many ports than you would actually ever need, but looking at the fact that gaming consoles or the VR headsets, they do require these ports.

Bottomline

The laptop is a must buy for all hardcore gamers if it comes within your set budget, I think the display was good and the smooth features of the keyboard and touchpad just added to it. From all the conventional good features that every laptop has, this ROG series laptop stood out due to its super amazing graphics card which lets you play games easily even on ultra settings. This itself should tell you that this laptop is really intense when it comes to gaming and hence gives an amazing gaming experience.

The laptop is travel-friendly but the battery is not going to last really long when it comes to gaming. Even though I do not prefer laptops with low battery life but this laptop has some really major specs which are way above than the other gaming laptops and I would still recommend this laptop without a doubt.

So this was my take on the Asus ROG series VR ready laptop, I hope you liked it and in the case of any questions or comments leave them in the comment section below and I would be happy to help. 🙂
