Design and Display
The laptop cover has a really nice Aluminum brush finish along with the fighter inspired lines(which do not glow unlike a few other laptops of the ROG series). The logo sits beautifully on the cover although I consider the look of the ASUS ROG G751 JY a bit better when gaming laptops are concerned.
This edition of the ROG series sports a more premium and classy look rather than the rugged gaming look which is usually seen in the high-end gaming laptops. The display resolution of this laptop is 1920 x 1080 pixels and it is a nice HD quality matte display and gives a nice vibrant pop of colors which is something really mainstream for a laptop of this level, however, I must admit the display is really great and almost as good as the G751 JY.
The laptop weighs around 6.6 pounds which is way better than the G751JY which weighed around 8.4 pounds making this laptop easier to carry and more travel-friendly than the latter.
Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is comfortable and it lights up, but it is not the same as the backlit feature in the other ASUS gaming laptops. The gamer controls W, A, S, D have their walls lighting up in a prominent red color as they are the major controls needed for gaming. The keyboard is comfortable and I must add that I generally find such keyboards really comfortable to use.
The keyboard does include a number pad on the right corner making the touchpad more aligned towards the left. The touchpad is sensitive, accurate and really comfortable to use. You have Asus Gestures and other features included which makes the trackpad customizable. The overall keyboard and touchpad quality are really good, however, it is not great enough to make the laptop stand out from the crowd.
Audio and webcam
The Audio in this laptop is powered by the exclusive SonicMaster technology which gives crystal-clear high-fidelity audio , while the accompanying ROG AudioWizard provides up to five presets tailor-made for popular game genres. This exclusive feature adds up to the gaming feature of the laptop. I feel that the audio of the laptop is good and it does go really loud when at max volumes but it is not as loud as the Alienware 15.
The laptop includes 1.2 MP HD camera, so you can easily use it to skype or even use it for video conferencing. The picture quality is good and it the quality is something which is common in most of the gaming laptops these days. Most of the ROG laptops have the same kind of webcam, a major difference can be seen in the Alienware laptops but the one in this laptop is good for the price you pay.
Gaming and Graphics
The laptop includes a NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M 4GB GDDR5 which is something not that great about it and I feel they could have included the 970M rather. You need to realize that when it comes to the graphics card, any upgrades you would want to make in future will lead to the replacement of the laptop and not only the graphics card. So, as a gamer, it is better to go for the 980M or at least the 970M. If you indulge in light gaming then the 960M could be your choice where you can play all the games in Medium settings and very few games in the high settings.
Games like GTA 5, Rise of Tomb Raider or Battlefield 4 is unplayable at the ultra settings and you may want to run on medium settings for a smooth gameplay. With the 128 SSD, the laptop is pretty fast and the performance of the laptop is exceptionally good. In the performance zone, the laptop is pretty much sorted as it even includes a 1 TB of HDD.The SSD is super fast and even has faster data transfers and load times and in this laptop, you can easily upgrade the memory as well. The memory is expandable to 32GB.
Battery Life and Overheating issues
The battery life of Asus laptops, in general, isn’t really that great. The battery life does not last long and while normal browsing it can make your battery last for about 5 hours or so and while playing games your battery will last for not more than two hours. For some reason, I think they really need to improve the battery quality of the ROG series of laptops but the only reasons these laptops are doing well is because of the high-quality specs they offer for a given price.
The laptop does not have any major overheating issues and doesn’t get unusually hot while gaming though it does warm up after long hours of gaming but even then it doesn’t get too hot and stays at a moderate temperature.
Ports and Warranty
The laptop includes the following ports- 1 x Microphone-in/Headphone-out jack, 1 x USB 3.1 TYPE C port(s), 2 x USB 3.0 port(s), 1 x USB 2.0 port(s), 1 x RJ45 LAN Jack for LAN insert and a HDMI port.
It comes with a 2-year limited International hardware warranty. (It can be different for different countries)
Bottomline
This laptop isn’t up to my expectations for the MSRP, however, the discounted price which comes down to $1147 is a better price and its specs are very similar to the Lenovo Ideapad Y700 which has almost everything similar except for the battery life which is worse in the latter.
For an entry level gaming laptop, it is a good choice but I would rather suggest you the Acer predator which is around the same price and has better specs than this laptop. The graphics card is NVIDIA Ge Force 970M in the Acer predator and it has slightly better specs and even battery life.
What do you think? Isn’t the Acer Predator 15 G9-591-70VM a much better option?
