Oculus’ Santa Cruz Prototype is probably going to replace the Oculus Rift in terms of performance by going wireless. This headset might give you the best of both the worlds which is the Oculus Go and the Oculus Rift but at a higher price point.
If you are happy with the current Oculus Rift then you probably might think about this VR headset but if there is someone who just wants to get started with the best VR headset of the year then you might want to wait for this one to release.
This VR headset has the potential of being the best VR headset leaving the Oculus Rift, Vive, and the PlayStation VR behind. Although we do have the HTC Vive Pro which is soon going to release, once the Santa Cruz is out, we would have more VR headsets and probably more options to choose from. However, on a sad note, the release date and the price is not yet confirmed.
Later this year, they might come with the dev kits but that means that if they delay the release of the fully finished VR headset then we might probably get to see it the next year. Even though the release dates are not decided we still can get excited about a few features of this headset-
1. It is comfortable. According to most of the reviewers who got their hands on the prototype have said that it wears well and the weight is equally distributed hence not making it feel very heavy. Technically it is either of the same weight as the Oculus Rift or slightly heavier but it is pretty comfortable and you won’t feel the weight on your face.
2. The tracking is supposed to be more accurate and better in comparison to the existing touch controllers. The headset is going to have a much better-designed tracking system and since the headset uses inside out tracking, you can clearly expect a much more immersive VR experience.
3. The audio is on the straps of the headset like the Oculus GO. Yes, you heard it right, instead of two headphones being attached to the VR headset like the Oculus Rift, in this case, you have it on the straps which makes audio much better and the overall headset feels more comfortable to wear.
4. The VR headset is going to be wireless. The wide-angle camera around its edges is going to help the tracking on this VR headset and hence going completely wireless is not going to affect the accuracy of the tracking on this VR headset.
Now, most of the VR headset companies are focusing on making their headset wireless, although it could be possible that they are not as powerful as teh PC VR headset as in the case of the headset being powered by the PC, you can use them for longer durations as they won’t be running on a battery but that might not be the case with these headsets. Although the hardware details of this VR headsets is not yet out but later this year we might get to hear more about this new Oculus Prototype.
Is it safe to say that by next year we might be in the wireless VR phase?
