HP and Acer VR headsets- The new thing in VR

May 16, 2017 by Shrey Leave a Comment

This year we would be greeted with two new VR headsets from HP and Acer and both of them are starting at $300 and the pre-orders started on May 11, 2017. Although the VR headsets are relatively cheaper than the Oculus Rift and the HTC vive but there is news that these headsets apparently use LED display unlike the  Rift and the Vive sporting the OLED ones making them slightly more expensive.

The headset has a pretty cool blue and black look and it is said to be a Mixed Reality headset. Only time would tell how great these headsets are with the content but for now, they do not look that bad as an investment. It is easy to wear the headset and it is very comfortable which is a major advantage for a VR headset that is aimed at being used for long gaming sessions.

The pre-orders for the two VR headsets started on May 11(I know this post is a little late), however, both the VR headsets are intended to be released during the holiday season(the full consumer version which includes the VR headset and the touch controllers bundle) and hence most of the content on them would be released during that time. To be honest, I did expect a lot from both the VR headsets but reading the reviews on Upload VR, it was clear that there is a lack of quality in comparison to the expensive VR headsets like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.

You can possibly say that you are trading away quality for money in these VR headsets but honestly, I wish they could optimize the VR headset and try to bring near Oculus Rift  VR  quality experiences to the consumers. There is still hope although when the team at Upload VR had tried the development kit which had some stutter to the visuals. Hoping that the time these headsets are released towards the end of the year we see a much better consumer version which would be relatively better in comparison to the Rift and the Vive.

These VR headsets come with motion controllers as well which would be bundled along with the VR headset and would cost approximately $400. This makes the overall cost of the bundle $200 or less than the cost of the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. However, there are a lot of differences between the Oculus Rift and the new Microsoft-powered Acer bundle. The Acer VR headset does not need external cameras or laser emitting boxes to work which is pretty interesting.

There will be a few limitations in terms of quality when compared and this can either be a hit or a miss. But this does seem promising and worth a try, all we can do is wait and watch!
What do you think about these new VR headsets?

Will they outsell the Rift when released?
