Sony VR headset Review

July 27, 2016 by Shrey 44 Comments

The gaming world is now stormed with the Virtual Reality headsets resulting in VR headsets for PS4  because with Oculus and HTC Vive in the picture, the developers of Sony had to come out with a PlayStation VR, codenamed Project Morpheus in order to have a stand in the cut-throat competition between the VRheadsets.

However, the VR headset for PS4 will not be released before the month of October this year and till then it will be leaving the market space to its competitors. The team did come out with its demo and a few featured games that would be launched alongside with the VR headset. Till now, it is confirmed that there will be around 50 games which are going to be launched alongside the PS VR.

The PS VR is one of the console oriented VR headsets and there has been a lot of demand for this VR headset than expected by the manufacturers. It is one of the fastest sold hardware at GameStop and that itself suggests that the PS VR has a very large target audience to reach.Without further ado, let’s get into the specifications of this VR headset.

What you get in the Core Headset box

Well if you order for a PSVR you should be expecting these accessories included in it.

Capture

However, one should note that the box doesn’t include PlayStation track camera to track your movements and the PlayStation Move wand controllers so that is an added expense(PlayStation Move being optional). But that is in the case of the core headset box which includes just the headset and a set of cables as seen in the picture above. The launch bundle, on the other hand, includes the contents of the core headset and the additional tracking camera with the PlayStation Move.(Both are available on www.amazon.com)

However, since it would work with the PS4 console so the headset will work with the DualShock 4 which comes along with the PS4 and you can buy the PlayStation Move for a room-scale experience(Optional), which would make the VR experience more immersive.

Quality of the headset

Moving to the headset it has a bit lower specs compared to the Oculus Rift, however, the experience is no less and it maybe not as great as the Oculus or the Vive, but it surely is amazing. When it comes to the price of the headset, it is less than the Rift, however, there is an additional tracking camera which needs to be bought for the headset to work.

  • It has a 5.7-inch screen and the refresh rate is about 120 Hz.
  • It is pretty comfortable to wear as compared to the other VR headsets and that could be a major advantage for a few of us who are planning on staying with their VR headsets on for a couple of hours.
  • And yes, you are going to have resolution issues if you are used to using the high-end Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive. But that is no deal breaker since we have to admit that both the Oculus and the Vive demand for beefy PC specs in exchange for a more immersive experience
  • However, the headset is pretty good when it comes to tracking the head movements  it does the job very accurately. It enables you to look around, implying that it is supported with 360 degrees head tracking system.

Sony decided to launch about 50 games along with its VR headset and a few of them being Valkyrie and Job Simulator, however, since it is compatible with the console I’m expecting the content to only increase with time. The PlayStation Neo is up for a release next year and by then the content would increase by multiple times.

This is pretty good gaming dosage for all the hardcore gamers. However, for the price of $399 and the added expense of the PlayStation camera and the PlayStation Move we need to wait and watch if it would be more than the price of the Oculus Rift or not.

Nevertheless, this VR headset is a much better option for all the PS4 console owners because nobody would go for the rift or the Vive as they would require a PC with high specs which would again cost something around $1000 and more.

Should I buy the Sony VR headset?

If you are a PlayStation addict and would want to get into the virtual world of gaming then I guess it is the perfect choice for you. There is no comparison here with the Oculus Rift or the Vive because once you look into the specifications of the laptop that you need to run them, you would find the PS VR a much better option. For all the PS4 console owners, the PS VR is definitely a much better option than the other two VR headsets in the competition.

If you look at the PlayStation VR headset, it surely is in the game of catch up with the other VR headsets like the Rift or the Vive, but what makes it different is that it only requires the PS4 console and people who already own it, should definitely go for this VR headset.

PlayStation VR compatible games

The VR headset developers have promised the release of 50 games by the end of 2016. Sony has been very strict on the games that are compatible with the headset and has reportedly not accepted to include any games that go below 60fps. This shows that even though the PlayStation VR is the last headset that is being launched among the three major VR headsets, the developers do not intend to leave any room for lagging or blurry frames.

The headset even includes a cinematic mode which gives the players the feel that they are playing their games on a big virtual screen. The PS VR does make the games look visually spectacular and the Resident Evil has to be one of my favorites among the 50 games that are to be released with the PlayStation VR headset.

The list of the games include EVE-Valkyrie,Resident Evil 7, 100ft Robot Golf, Ace Combat 7, Adrift, Albino Lullaby, Allison Road, Apollo 11 VR Experience, Aquarion Evol,Ark: Survival Evolved, Atom Universe, Bad Bird, Battlezone, Chernobyl VR Project, Classroom Aquatic, Crystal Rift, Cult County, etc.

Do check out the video to see how the games look on the PS VR and how immersive the experience can get.

Conclusion

The PlayStation VR headset is an ideal choice for a PS4 owner and it is in a way cheaper than the Oculus Rift. Even though the additional tracking camera and the move wands have to be bought, it still won’t as much as the Oculus Rift bundled with the Oculus Touch which is to be released by the end of this year.

The PS4 console supports only one VR headset at a time, so in multiplayer games, you can have two people playing the game on TV and one of them wearing the VR headset. With the release of the headset, there would be 50 games that would support the PS VR which is really a great start.

Coming to the cost of the headset, it is worth $399 and along with it, you would definitely need the tracking camera, Sony did not include it in the box since the tracking camera and the PlayStation Move have been around for a few years now and there might be many consumers who already own it.

So there are rumors that the VR headset would be bundled with the camera and the wand controllers or you could even buy them separately in order to make it easier for the consumers when they make their purchase.

Buy Sony VR headset

If you have opted to try out the Sony VR headset then you really need to wait till 13 October 2016 as that is when the consumer version would be available on their official sites. Till then all we can hope is that they have enough stocks and it does have a huge demand and supply difference.

Awesome review Shrey, I can’t believe that this is where technology is on it’s way to. When I just got my PS 3 I was so amazed with the quality of the graphics and game play that I couldn’t imagine that it could get any better. Then I bought a PS 4 and packed away my PS 3 because it was just incredible. Now it is just going to the next level with VR headsets. I didn’t even know about it until now. Wow very futuristic!

      Hi Joe

Sony has been putting in a lot of efforts in order to make this PS VR headset launch a success and it is indeed getting everyone excited to actually see the final end product.

They have reportedly even make technological advancement on the PlayStation Move controllers and are doing really well when it comes to the marketing of the headset.

I really can’t wait for the launch day to come!

I had just read your other review on the OR headset and I left a comment on there. Since I play PS4 & PC I think I should see how the Sony VR headset does.

I am pretty excited to see games like Until Dawn on VR! What games are you looking forward to?

      Hi Anthony

When it comes to games on VR, I really can’t wait for Resident Evil 7 , I love that game to bits and the VR version of it must be one game you cannot miss.

Actually when it comes to Oculus and the PlayStation VR, the latter gets you more excited since it is console based and the wait for Oculus Touch is just killing most of us.

Wow, even Sony is coming out with their own VR headsets now. There are a variety of these products in the market, and it can be rather confusing for some people.

I’m really looking forward to the release of this VR headset for PlayStation. Can’t believe that Resident Evil 7 is going to be made for VR as well. It’s sure going to be a hell of a horrifying ride!

    Great post!

      Hi Farhan

Yes, I’m actually way too excited about Resident Evil making it to the PS VR as well, the Sony VR headsets are apparently releasing on 13 October and I really want to see the consumer reactions on these VR headsets.

The only good thing that is happening is that due to the release of new VR headsets in the market, Samsung Gear VR has been reducing it’s price and probably that would make the access to high quality mobile VR headsets much easier for the masses now.

Im just not sure while we wear this And walk around without seeing whats really happening in front of you, will u be in trouble like hitting a wall or falling off a stair? Lol

      Hi Kien,

I do understand what you mean here, but in order to use these headset you need to clear off some space around you in the room so that you can avoid such accidents.

These VR headsets even come with the recommended room size you should be using them in , so that you have a better immersive VR experience.

The Sony VR does look very very promising. The retailer I work for had a massive tech conference which only a select few got to attend and this headset was being demo’ed needless to say many “whoa” and “wow” were overheard. VR seems to be the next best thing coming and if its anything like this immersive experience we all got to share the Sony VR should be leading the pack for sure!

      Hi Patrick

There has been a lot of sales report on the Vive and the RIft saying that the sales have dropped drastically or if not dropped, they have just remained stagnate and many people have seen suggesting that it is mainly because of the price.

Most of the consumers are actually waiting for the price to come down and keeping that expectation in mind I really think Sony will lead the Pack as it is lower in cost.

however, it does put a limitation on the console owners as only those who already have a PS4 console would try and make this purchase but looking at the PS4 console owners, I think that Sony leading the VR market is not a tough visual.

I’ve never actually used VR tech for gaming yet (unless you count that one time many years ago when I tried the virtual boy but I prefer not to speak of that lol) but I’ve actually always been very curious about Virtual Reality based technology and it’s something I’ve been studying for a while now.

It’s amazing that we’ve gotten here in gaming. Makes me wonder if this is the part where it can really show its true potential or if its just a fad at the moment and it’s still to early. But I think I might want to try this out in the future if I ever get the chance. Thanks a lot for this article.

What vr games would you recommend for a newcomer like me to get used to the concept?

This is a great review of Sony’s VSR headset for the PS4. My boyfriend is a stone cold gamer and I know that this would make a great gift for him. And the fact that there is so much demand now at GameStop leads me to believe that October 13 is going to be a smashing success for Sony. I’m looking for a gift for my little cousin though, he’s 13 and his birthday falls right after the launch, I’m wondering if this is right for him. Or do older teens and adults like this game better? I know some of the gaming content can be a little bit too much. But I’d love to know what sort of games for younger kids does Sony plan to do for virtual reality?

I do not think it is suggested for kids below 12, although even then I think it is better than you avoid your little cousin from using it too much. Many report do suggest that hey are safe but I highly recommend that even if your cousin uses it, do not let him use it for more than 25-30 minutes straight as it can strain a kid’s eye.

Your boyfriend though might love it and I think it would actually make a perfect gift for him.The PS VR also comes with a demo CD that has all the game demos so that you could get the taste of the VR world.

I think this is a perfect gift for those who already have the PlayStation console, so do check on that first !

      Hope this helps,

It’s awesome to see gaming technology evolving very fast, especially with the introduction of virtual reality. While I haven’t tried VR in my gaming experience, I would actually like to consider one because I believe it will be a wonderful experience. I just don’t like the way it looks from the outside because it’s like you look nothing while in fact, you’re like in a completely new world inside this gadget. Great review, by the way.

Awesome review Shrey, I can’t believe how far technology has come from 10 years ago. The graphics in the video seems remarkable and would be a joy to play. I honestly, can’t wait to get my hands on this and have a try for myself. Great review and it was very detailed. Explained everything I needed to know. Do you think over time the cost will drop or would it hold its value?

Yeah, you can actually get some free trails at Gamestop or BestBuy and if you are a console owner you are just going to fall in love with it.

I really thought it wouldn’t be as good as the Rift which it wasn’t but neither it was a deal breaker, I mean it is perfect for PS4 console owners and others who plan on buying the new Sony console next year.

I don’t think you would get headaches, however in a few games you can get a little motion sick but report have been around that SOny has been working towards eleiminating the motion sickness factor in the VR headsets.

You have to go for the Sony VR headset, if you have the PS4 console, that is what my opinion is rather than spending some extra bucks again on the touch, you can definitely go for this VR headset.

If you are really not sure then you could take a further step and try the demos of both the VR headset and then come to a conclusion of which you think is better, however, I will recommend the PlayStation VR headset looking at the situation now in the VR market.

Very Cool!!! I haven’t been keeping up with the advancements of the VR headsets. I heard of Oculus for a few years now but I didn’t even realize Sony was coming out with one for the PS4.
Here I was thinking of getting a new television…but maybe I should wait for the new Sony VR headset for my PS4.
I am pleased to see there is an option to use in cinematic mode. Assuming that cinematic mode means we can play regular games and watch any video as though it is on a big screen tv?

It’s too bad they are not providing the PS Move and PS camera with the VR at that price. That may be the tipping price point for me.

Guess I will need to review the pros and cons with either getting the Sony VR headset or getting a new TV.

    Great review as always Shrestha!

      Hi Paul,

Yes, not pairing the VR headset with the camera and the wands was a bummer but it is still better than the rift or the Vive where you need a computer with beefy specs and that might alone cost around $1500 but if you don’t have a PS4 then the scene is totally different.

All I can say is, it is the best option for the PS4 console owners else you have the rift to consider.

I have been keeping track of the oculus rift ever since it was first announced as a project and I currently want it but the only issue is I am going to have to spend $2000 on top of the oculus rifts price tag because I don’t have a high end gaming pc.

When I heard of Playstation VR it peeked my interest only because I already have a PS4 and all I would have to purchase in addition to PS VR would be the camera.

Now on the other hand if I had the money I would opt. to build the pc and get a rift.

I agree with you, but there have been few PC’s that are built which are VR ready and come under $700 budget so you can think of giving that a try.

However, I have reviewed VR ready laptops which are around $1500, but yes they are expensive and when it comes to comparison I think it is way better to buy the PS VR for all the PlayStation owners than spending a bunch of money buying a VR ready laptop and then the VR headset.

However, the only reason to do that could be the quality that Oculus Rift offers, but as of now I think the PS VR is going to get to the top of the VR headsets chart!

It really is amazing how fast technology is advancing. I tried one of these things a few weeks ago at my friends house, but it was a super cheap version and it made me feel sick haha.

I noticed that the Oculus Rift is almost 10 times more expensive than this product. How much difference would you say there is between the two headsets? Obviously the Oculus would be better, but is it worth paying the extra?

As I have a negative experience with a cheap version of these things, I think I would rather get the top of the range one if I was going to get any.

I’m so interested to see where this technology will end up, but I think I will pass on it for now. If I come into a bit of money though, I will definitely check it out!

The sony vr headset sounds really interesting! I think it’s going to create a whole new world and a revolution in the way we play games! I’ve watched gameplay videos so far, I have yet to experience it, but it looks so fun, I cant even imagine the insane amount of comedy people would experience playing Job Simulator! Do you know if surgeon simulator will be on ps4’s VR?

I know the Surgeon Simulator is playable with the Rift and Vive but as of now they are just available on the PS4. They had mentioned it to be compatible with the PS VR but that soon the talks about it faded and it just remained like a thing which they mentioned to be there in the list of games. They have not yet spoken about its release date or anything so as of now NO it is not available with the PSVR

I have a VR right now and it is seriously one of the most amazing things I’ve ever experienced. I think a lot of people don’t quite grasp the concept on what VR actually is, but once you try it you’re hooked. Instead of just 3d, you’re actually in the game. It’s so amazing. Do you think Sony might ever make a sequel to it though?
