HTC Vive Pro vs HTC Vive- Which one is better for you?

August 13, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

HTC Vive Pro was advertised as the ultimate VR headset with much better features than the Vive. The Vive had already aced every VR headset in the market when it came to the features, so our expectations from the Vive Pro was a lot!

The only question that would come to your mind is which one is worth the money, the Vive or the Pro?

Well, both these VR headsets have their own advantages and disadvantages but if you are looking at which one best suits your needs then do read this detailed comparison post.

The Pro is definitely way more expensive than the HTC Vive but are the features really that amped such that you would want to spend around $1000 more and get the HTC Vive Pro version?

To know more on this continue reading the post where we would compare each and every feature in detail-

Design

The HTC Vive has a premium design where you are going to love the whole aesthetics of the headset. The headset, however, sports a full black look while the Vive Pro is deep blue in color with two sensors placed right in front of the headset for tracking.

The Vive Pro has more cushioning on the face pad which means it is more comfortable in comparison to the HTC Vive. The Vive Pro has attached headphones as well which is more like the Audio Deluxe strap attached to the HTC Vive.

The headphones on the Vive Pro can be easily lifted above the ears as there is a hinge connecting the main headset with teh headphones. At the back of the headset, you have a screw with which you can adjust the Vive Pro on your face.

The HTC Vive had Velcro straps with which you can secure the headset in place so the dial on the Pro is more like an upgrade from the consumer version.

The HTC Vive Pro has a better weight distribution as well, making it really easy for someone to wear the headset for long periods of time. Overall, the HTC Vive Pro has some really good improvements in the design in comparison to the consumer version of the Vive making it suitable for longer gaming hours.

There are some really visible changes and improvements in the design of the Pro which makes the design of the Pro better than that of the HTC Vive Consumer version.

Display

There is quite a prominent change in the display and the Pro obviously has aced the Vive in this feature. The Pro headset has a 2,880 x 1,600-pixel resolution and AMOLED Display, this makes the colors look more lifelike in VR.

The Vive, on the other hand, has a display resolution of 2,160 x 1,200  pixel which is not as great as the Vive Pro but it is still pretty good for an immersive VR experience.

Now comparing the display on the two headsets, the text was clearer on the Vive Pro. The pixel density is better on the Vive Pro making the images clearer and better making the whole VR experience immersive.

There is very little screen door effect in the Vive Pro and trust me, the screen door effect is way less than what we had seen on the HTC Vive headset.

The Vive Pro did have some better resolution and display, however, it was not that great that I would suggest you get it ASAP. The Vive Consumer version would work just fine if you are thinking of getting a VR headset for your personal use and gaming.

Refresh Rate and Field of View

The refresh rate for the HTC Vive and the Vive Pro is 90 Hz. Both the headsets work pretty smoothly at the same refresh rate and this is pretty much the standard refresh rate for most of the VR headsets.

The FOV is 110 degrees for both the Vive and Vive Pro, making these two features pretty much the same for both the VR headsets.

I guess it would be pretty amazing if there was an improvement in teh Field of View as that would make the experience realistic and immersive.

The headsets would have had a lot of difference if these features were improved but for now, both of them stand on the same pedestal when it comes to the Refresh Rate and Field of View.

Controllers and Tracking

The Vive Pro trackers are designed in such a way so that the tracking is more accurate in comparison to the Vive.

The headset is compatible with the controllers and lighthouse of the HTC Vive and it is also compatible with the LightHouse 2.0 which is going to be a specific release for the Pro.

The tracking on the Vive is 15 x 15 feet and it remains the same if you use the same lighthouse with the Vive Pro. However, the Vive Pro has the Lighthouse 2.0 compatibility as well which increases the tracking range to 33 x 33 feet.

This means that you can have tracking up to 100 meters squared which is pretty insane. This in itself shows that the Vive more is more for commercial use in large spaces.

You can easily get the Vive Pro if you are looking forward to using it in a multiplayer arena or in the case you own a Virtual Reality gaming zone.

There is even a possibility that you can use the Vive Pro completely wireless. While this was possible even with the HTC Vive with the TPCast, we might get to see a much smarter version with the Vive Pro that makes it completely wireless.

The Vive Pro definitely has way more features in comparison to the regular Vive and it is more of a commercial VR headset that can be used for gaming events or a VR gaming arena.

Conclusion

The Vive and the Vive Pro are two iconic VR headsets and they have some pretty cool features.

The HTC Vive is more of a consumer version headset and if you looking for a VR headset for gaming then you should definitely invest in this headset as it is affordable and gives you the best VR experience.

The Vive is a steal if you look at the features it provides at the given price. Since the price drop on the headset, it is definitely one of the best out there given that you have all the PC requirements needed to run the HTC Vive.

In case you are looking for a headset that you can use the commercial purpose then the Vive Pro is definitely the way to go, it is perfect for large scale tracking and with the increased resolution and other features it might be one of the best headsets that you might find out there.

Finally, the choice of the headset really depends on your requirements and if you just want to go with a simple VR headset then the HTC Vive is something you should look out for.

The Vive Pro is amazing but there was nothing that great about the headset that would make me suggest you go ahead and ditch your Vive and go for the Pro.

It’s more like if you want a headset for commercial purpose then go for the Pro else you should definitely stick to the Vive.

The Pro is definitely way more expensive than the Vive so until and unless you have no plans of using it for commercial use, there is no point shelling out thousands of dollars for an expensive VR headset.

The content on both the VR headset is the same anyway and if you want to

Are you planning on getting the Vive Pro?

Do let us know what you think about the two headsets? Which one according to you is worth the money?
