How to Manually enable Daydream on Phones

March 26, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

Daydream has this unique feature where the apps just open up in Daydream dedicated phones. Now, you can use the Daydream VR headset with other phones but you will not be able to access the Daydream dedicated apps.

However, you can use all the Google Cardboard apps and games which in itself is going to make buying the Daydream headset for your non-Daydream compatible phone worth the while.

But, we do have a solution here. From the title of the post, it is clear that we have found a way that you can use Daydream dedicated apps on your phone but there is a catch.

You might have to change a few settings on your phone and until you are okay with working on the software, you should not try this method.

There can be chances that things could go wrong so be sure that you are okay with taking these chances as in the case you are not so sure, we would advise that you stay away from such experiments.

Anyway, for all the daredevils out there, let’s get started!

What do you need?

The basic requirements to do it on a not supported android phone are the following-

1. Bluetooth 4.2 LE

2. Display between 4.7 and 6 inches

3. Resolution at least 1080p @ 60Hz display

4. OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan

5. Able to decode 2 instances of 60fps video simultaneously

6. Consistent 60fps rendering

7. Temperature sensors capable of reading device surface temperature

Now, even though you know you need these it gets a little difficult to tell if your phone has all the following requirements mentioned above.

So basically, most of the phones released this year and the previous year are going to have these features.

Now moving on to what you need to actually do to enable Daydream in these phones is to follow the following steps.

Before getting started, make sure that you have Android 7.0 or higher. It would not work otherwise.

You need to download the root app from Playstore as you need to work with this app to get started with things. Make sure that you have the latest version of Daydream app as well.

Now moving on the important part, let’s get started-

1. Locate /system/etc/permissions/handheld_core_hardware.xml on your phone as you are going to edit this.

2. Then you need to locate root permissions and add <feature name=”android.software.vr.mode” /> <feature name=”android.hardware.vr.high_performance” /> to the tag.

3. Once you are done with these changes you need to restart your phone.

Now you can launch the Daydream app and enjoy. Something that you should keep in mind is that these steps are going to change controls on the system so once you are done using the app, it is better to set everything back to normal and undo all the changes.

These changes can take a toll on the security of your phone software and that is not going to be fun in the long run.

Do let us know how this worked out for you guys!
