Overheating issues with the Samsung Gear VR

August 22, 2016 by admin 2 Comments

Using the gear VR for a long period of time does result in Overheating of the phone which is pretty common in Samsung phones. However, while playing with the gear VR it the lenses can get a little foggy.

Looking into the problem I saw a couple of people who came up with great ideas on how to solve this issue.I have listed few simple solutions below which would keep your phones cool inside the VR headset.

1. Using a cooling pack

This one is something I liked a lot as it is a cheap quick fix. It is very easy to implement and I liked the idea when I saw it on YouTube. I had never thought of it before and after using it with my Gear VR I did feel that it increased the gameplay by a few more hours as the phone took a longer time to heat up due to the cooling pack.

Check out the video on how this YouTuber used this idea and tried solving the problem completely as well as increased the gaming by several hours.

It doesn’t take much to invest in a cooling pack and it doesn’t even add up any significant weight on the VR headset. This was one of  the best solutions I could find. This could be incorporated with any VR headsets. The next solution is innovative and involves a little bit of DIY, do check it out.

=> Buy cooling packs off amazon

2. Installing a Fan in the Headset Cover

This video here shows you how you can actually install a fan on the cover of your VR headset which would cool your phone while you are constantly using it(similar to the exhaust fans we have in laptops).

I really liked the way the fan is installed functioning like an exhaust fan and I really appreciate the idea, however in order to implement this be ready for a little DIY that is to be done here and the fact that you would no longer have the same intact good as new VR headset cover. It  is to be noted that it cannot be implemented on a few VR headsets.

Though this idea is really awesome as you get infinite hours of gameplay without any heating up of the phone.

3. Anti-Fog Spray

This spray is said to avoid fogging of the lenses in the VR headset which can happen due to the overheating of the phones. Though this solution does not directly solve the problem of overheating of the phone but is a solution on how to overcome the fogging issue that is a direct outcome of the overheating problem.

There are many anti-fogging sprays that could be used to overcome this issue and this video actually shows how effectively the spray works in order to avoid fogging of the lenses. It is pretty effective, I must say and maybe you could combine it  with the use of a cooling pack as suggested in the beginning to avoid both fogging and overheating of the phone respectively.

These solutions solve major problems that we face in any VR headset to a great extent and make the overheating and fogging issues negligible.

I hope you liked all the ideas and if you have any further questions leave them in the comment section below and I would be happy to help.

      Hi Isaac
Humidity usually causes the fogging.Inside the VR headset, it gets humid after using it for a long while and that is the reason the lenses fog up.
The most simple solutions that I have found is using shampoo, but that entirely depends on which brand of shampoo you are using. So, it may work with one brand of shampoo and may not work with another.
      I hope I answered your questions 🙂
