The new Oculus update comes with a native feature that helps you record your gameplay with Gear VR. The recently launched Gear VR with the remote did come with a few new features and they are all amazing making the new 2017 Gear VR version a much better upgrade than the previous versions of the VR headset.
Well, previously you had to use third-party apps in the previous Gear VR versions to record the gameplay on the VR headset, however with the new feature inbuilt in the Gear VR where you can record the videos without any apps makes the recording much easier.
If you are using the previous Gear VR version then this is the video that would guide you on how you can record your gameplay using third party apps. If you have the new Gear VR-2017 version then continue reading.
Although the feature does reduce some extra effort done to record videos on the previous versions of the VR headsets, it also includes a few setbacks which might be worth mentioning.
1. The video recording ends automatically when you exit from an app and this is annoying. If you want to switch between two apps within your video then that might take some editing effort on your part because once the recording app is closed, the video recording automatically ends there. In the case you want to show the transition between two apps, that is not possible in the case of the native recording.
2. There is no audio recording along with the video recording in the native VR app which is a bummer! They should have included the audio recording since that would have made recording the gameplay so much better, however, you can connect an audio cable and record the audio on your PC and format it using a software. These might be minor setbacks because there are ways that you can fix them just that they need some work from your side. Recording audio and then collaborating it with the video is not that difficult but it would be much easier if the feature was inbuilt.
How to record videos on the Gear VR?
The easiest way to use the native feature to record your gameplay on the Gear VR is as follows-
1. Go to the Oculus Menu and tap on the Utilities tab.
2. Now look at the start recording option and tap on it using your trackpad.
This would automatically start recording your videos on the Gear VR. As you are recording there would be a red button that would appear on the corner of the screen which notifies that the video is being recorded and whenever you stop you can always go back in the Oculus Folder and look for the recorded videos.
The advantage of using this feature over the third party apps is that it gives a much better view rather than the stereoscopic view that was present while recording the gameplay using other apps. The resolution is good as well being around 1024 x 1024 pixels which is pretty amazing!
Final Opinion
Although the native recording feature does not include the audio, it is still way better than using the third party apps that do not give you a nice view of the gameplay and trust me no one likes watching a recorded gameplay in stereoscopic view.
With a few add-ons and tweaks, you can easily record the perfect gameplay on your Gear VR and even make youtube videos by adding a mic and syncing the audio clip with the gameplay. The Voice over work has to be done if you want to post a video with your commentary on it. Hope this helped you to get a better understanding on how you can record your own gameplay with Gear VR.

This is a cool site. I like your reviews and will probably purchase some time down the road. You should sell gaming stuff too, that is a big market.

Shrey says
The price of what? Gear VR?

I really enjoyed this opinion!
Do you also use this gear?
If not, what do you use?
P.S.: I really liked the last paragraph (the one were you gave your conclusion, it was simple but on point).
Well, the article was exactly like that: useful but not too long or too short. That’s pretty cool!

Cool stuff. I with they had this kind of stuff when I was younger. you know back in the days of atari and arcades. I always had a pocket full of quarters. Well, anyway very nice. Maybe I could get some VR gear for the grandkids. Do you have to have a samsung cell phone or will any phone do?
Shrey says
Why just for the grandkids, you can play in VRyourself too!
There is way too many arcade and multiplayer games that are fun, make sure to try them out. There is this post on the best multiplayer game on the Gear VR, check out the article as well!

I knew I’d have something to say IMMEDIATELY after running into this page. I got a pair of these for free with my wife’s phone upgrade and OMG they’re awesome! I have videos of her family members and friends trying them out and they’re HILARIOUS! I wasn’t even aware of this new upgrade you’re explaining in the post so thanks for throwing in the amazon link, I don’t really by anywhere else online anyway lol.
Great review Shrey!

I’m looking into making some YouTube let’s play videos, I will be sure to consider this item as I’m looking into trying out mobile titles for it. I’m still unsure of how to make one so your description on this page of how to record on the VR will surely help.
Shrey says
Yes, although you need to figure out the Voice over part, you can use software like Audacity, this might really help in editing and recording your Voice overs!

I appreciated that you unbiasedly showed both the pros and the cons. That is indeed a bummer about the audio not recording but it just means someone can be more creative. I also liked your color scheme. It was very neutral and relaxing. Made me want to jump to other pages and read more. Nice job on your site.
