Samsung Odyssey Plus is a Mixed Reality headset which is the successor of the Samsung Odyssey headset which in its time was one of the best Mixed Reality headsets in the lot.
The VR experience in the Odyssey was what made it the best and in this review, we would discuss all the different updates that come with the Odyssey Plus and if you should consider this headset against its predecessor.
The Samsung Odyssey headset was one of the best-mixed reality headsets in the lot, so without wasting any more time, let’s see how the Plus compares against the previous version.
Design and Build Quality
The design and build quality of the Odyssey Plus is pretty similar to the previous Samsung Odyssey headset. There is a halo band on the headset that helps you wear it comfortably on the face.
The headset weighs around 650 grams, which might be a little heavier than most of the headsets these days, but due to the even weight distribution, you are not going to have any issue when it comes to wearing the headset for long gaming sessions.
Something worth noting is that the Samsung Odyssey headset had a lot of complaints when released regarding the fit and comfort of the headset.
There was not enough room for your nose, and it felt very constricted to breathe while you are wearing the headset.
This has been improved with the new Samsung Odyssey Plus as you have a lot more room, and it is relatively more comfortable to wear than the previous Odyssey headset.
The headset otherwise is pretty much similar in design to the PSVR.
Display and Resolution
The Display resolution on the Samsung Odyssey is 1,440 x 1,600 per eye which is going to make your VR experience look and feel very realistic.
The AMOLED displays make VR experience feel life-like because hte colors appear very vibrant and colorful in comparison to many LCD screens out there that are usually present in other Mixed Reality headsets.
There is the Anti-SDE which removes all the screen door effect and it is so effective that it even beats classic headsets like Vive and Vive Pro on this aspect.
The visuals on the Odyssey plus are crystal clear, and it is way better than most of the headsets that are now in the market.
If you want a crystal clear VR screen where you can easily read all the text then the Odyssey Plus should be your consideration.
The anti-SDE is so effective that it makes movie watching experience on this headset incredibly immersive. One can only imagine how cool it would be to watch VR Porn on this headset.
The resolution though remains the same as the previous Samsung Odyssey headset but the anti-SDE effect makes a whole lot of difference in your whole VR experience with the Plus VR headset.
Refresh Rate and FOV
The refresh rate on the Samsung Odyssey Plus is 90 Hz which is pretty much the standard refresh rate with most of the headsets.
The main aim of having a higher refresh rate is to avoid motion sickness in VR, and with the refresh rate as that of the Samsung Odyssey Plus, it is safe to say that you are not going to feel any motion sickness whatsoever.
The FOV of the headset is 110 degrees, which is similar to the Odyssey headset.
The FOV makes the entire VR experience immersive and having a FOV of 110 degrees is not bad as you are going to feel like you are surrounded by VR.
Tracking and Controllers
The headset comes with two controllers that give you an interactive VR experience. The controllers work well, and they are pretty comfortable as well.
The headset comes with inside-out positional tracking, and you do not need sensors like in the case of the Rift, and Vive as all of it is inbuilt inside the headset.
This makes this VR headset easy to use, and you do not have to struggle with mounting the sensors, and everything like you had to do in case of the Oculus Rift and Vive earlier.
Gaming on the Samsung Odyssey Plus
The Samsung Odyssey Plus has plenty of games that you can choose from since you can browse games from both the Oculus and the Vive Platforms.
The Samsung Odyssey Plus does not have a lot of games on its platform, but once you go on platforms like SteamVR, you are going to find plenty of games that you are going to be able to play.
The gaming experience with the headset is amazing as the VR quality is so clear and immersive due to the high-quality lenses with the anti-SDE effect.
If you are someone who was bothered a lot with the Screen door effect, then you should stop reading the review and go ahead and get this headset for yourself.
Yes, it is that good, and you are going to enjoy playing games with the headset.
However, the PC specifications for the Samsung Odyssey Plus is something you should consider before investing in this MR headset.
One can definitely say from the minimum specs for this headset that the PC you need to a laptop with beefy specs. If you want the detailed specifications then you should check out the official page for Samsung Odyssey.
Audio on the headset
Another great feature of this headset is the inbuilt headphones that help you avoid an extra pair of headphones, which are nothing but added weight on the headset.
The quality of the headphones is pretty amazing, and they are going to make your entire VR experience immersive.
The Samsung Odyssey Plus comes with a better fit, and you are going to have a fantastic experience with the headset. The fit of the headset is better than the predecessor, and you are going to love the features on it.
Overall, I have been pretty impressed with the Samsung Odyssey Plus, and the anti- SDE effect steals the show. If you have a compatible PC, then you should go with this headset.
