Samsung Odyssey is one of the best headsets out there when compared to its other Windows Mixed Reality headset counterparts.
Comparing it with the Oculus Rift S is going to be exciting as both are tethered headsets, and the price point is close as well.
The Oculus Rift S has been released recently, and it is pretty much similar to the previous Rift but with a few upgrades. So are these upgrades going to give the Rift S a significant headstart?
We will soon find that out!
I mean, there are going to be many who can already take sides with the Rift S(including me, I’m trying not to), but let’s compare the features of both the headsets to reach a conclusion and see which one is better than the other.
Design and Build Quality
The Oculus Rift S has a very excellent design, and you are going to fall in love with how amazing the headset feels. The headset is comfortable like the predecessor and weighs about 561 grams.
The Rift S comes with a Halo design, unlike the three-way strap that we saw on the previous model. The Halo band gives you a comfortable fit, and you do not feel that the headset is cumbersome when you wear it.
Samsung Odyssey, on the other hand, looks premium and feels light. The material might feel like cheap plastic, and the headset is a little flimsy.
The Oculus Rift S is better in this aspect. The Odyssey does look sleek, and everything but the feel of the headset is not up to the mark and could get better.
The Odyssey can easily fit people with glasses. Something that might be an issue is the bleeding around the edges of the headset, which can be very distracting.
However, you can use some of the headset covers from VRcover, and you would see a huge difference, making the entire experience better.
When it comes to which headset is better in the design aspect, I would have to say the Oculus Rift S without any doubt.
Display and Resolution
The Samsung Odyssey comes with AMOLED displays and a resolution of 1440х1600 per eye. The AMOLED display gives you an excellent visual experience as the colors look more lifelike.
The Oculus Rift S comes with a single fast-switch LCD panel and a resolution of 2560×1440, which can be better than that of the Samsung Odyssey in terms of numbers but because it is an LCD panel you are going to colors a bit sharper.
The AMOLED display looks so much better in VR, and you are going to notice that once you wear the headset, but none the less, the Oculus Rift S has a decent display too, and you are going to enjoy both of them.
The Rift S comes with a Passthrough+ feature as well that lets you see your surroundings even while you are wearing your headset, which means you do not need to remove the headset if you have to check your messages or answer a call.
Refresh Rate and Field of View
Field of View is an essential aspect in VR as the more the FOV, the better is your VR experience. Both the headsets have a FOV of 110 degrees, which is pretty decent.
The only headset that has aced most of the headsets in the market when it comes to FOV has to be the Pimax 8k. But coming to the headsets in the discussion, they have the same FOV.
The refresh rate on the Samsung Odyssey is 60-90 Hz. The Oculus Rift S, on the other hand, has a refresh rate of about 80 Hz.
The refresh rates do not make much of a difference, but if you want to make that as the prime reason or your purchase, then the Samsung Odyssey is the VR headset for the win.
Tracking and Controllers
Both the headsets come with controllers, but first, let’s start with the ones that come with the Samsung Odyssey.
The Samsung Odyssey uses inside out tracking, which is impressive because you need to use no sensors or lighthouses as in the case of Vive.
This makes the setup of the Samsung Odyssey so much easier, and you are going to find that it uses relatively lesser wires than the Vive.
Everything comes at a price, and in this case, even though the Samsung Odyssey has lesser wires, teh tracking is not that great.
It does not give you a smooth tracking experience as you would get with the Oculus Rift S, making the RiftS my preference among the two without any doubt.
The Rift S also comes with an inside out tracking, which was one of its significant upgrades from the Oculus Rift. This makes the monitoring so much more comfortable with the headset.
The touch controllers on the Oculus Rift are smooth and comfortable to use. You are going to feel like they are an extension of your hand, and that was the best thing about using the headset.
In this aspect, without a doubt, I can say that one should go for the Oculus Rift S.
Games on the headsets
The games on both the headsets are pretty much similar, as you can browse the games on the Oculus Store even with the Odyssey.
There are some games on the Windows Mixed Reality page, but it is safe to say that none of them are that great.
You are going to find yourself on SteamVR or the Oculus Store.
Now, coming back to the gaming experience on both these headsets, the Samsung Odyssey is pretty amazing, but the tracking can be a real bummer.
You are going to find it ruining your gaming experience.
The Rift S comes with a fantastic tracking, and since it uses the same inside out tracking, the gaming experience on this headset is pretty amazing.
You are going to like everything about the Rift S when it comes to gaming, as it would make your gaming experience very interactive and immersive.
Overall, the Oculus Rift S is a better option in comparison to the Samsung Odyssey. It does cost a little bit more than the odyssey, but it is worth it.
You get better gaming experience with the rift, and since both of them are tethered headsets with almost similar technical specs, there is not much of a difference there.
The real difference comes in the gaming experience, and since the tracking of the Samsung Odyssey is not that great, it would be best to go with the Oculus Rift S.
If you are not willing to spend slightly more on the Rift S, then you can choose the Odyssey, but it depends on your budget and other factors that are involved in making your decision.
Do let us know which one among these two headsets is your favorite and which one would you rather buy?
