Samsung Odyssey HMD is a mixed reality headset and it is probably the best among all the other MR Headsets out there. Samsung has some really good VR headsets under its belt and one of it is the Gear VR.
Comparing a tethered headset like the Samsung Odyssey to a wireless headset like the Oculus Go is definitely going to be a task since both the headsets are completely different on a few aspects.
However, that just makes this post a really fun thing to do as we get to look at different obvious aspects of the headsets and compare them to see which one is better.
If you want to invest in a VR headset but you are confused about which one is a better investment among these two headsets then this post would be immensely helpful.
We would be comparing some key features and towards the end of the post, you would easily be able to deiced on which VR headset is better than the other.
Table of Contents
Design of the Headsets
The design of the Samsung Odyssey is pretty good and it kind of resembles that of the PSVR but in all black. The build material of the headset seems very plastic and not that sturdy.
This is something that most of the Mixed Reality headsets have in common and that is, the build quality of the headset is not that great.
Although being made of slightly cheap material, the headset does weigh around 645 grams which is pretty heavy in comparison to the other headsets in the MR headset family.
The Oculus Go, on the other hand, feels sturdy and well built. The headset weighs around 470 grams which is way less than the Odyssey.
The headset comes with a simple design in comparison to the Odyssey. The Odyssey has inbuilt headphones while you would not find it on the Oculus Go.
Both the headsets come with a 3.5mm headphone jack so you can plug in the headphones of your choice. The Oculus Go is light grey in color and comes with a three-way strap so that the headset fits perfectly on your face.
You can adjust the lens better on the Samsung Odyssey than the Oculus Go, so if you wear glasses like me then you have a better chance of getting a focused image with the Odyssey.
The display on the headsets
Both the headsets have display resolution better than most of the high-end VR headsets out there.
So, when it comes to comparing them with other headsets like the Rift or the Acer Mixed Reality headset, then you can easily choose anyone among the two and they would be better.
To be precise, the Oculus Go has a 2560 x 1440 fast-switch LCD display and the Samsung Odyssey has a resolution of 1,440 x 1,600 pixels per lens and comes with an AMOLED display.
The AMOLED display is more vibrant and rich in comparison to the LCD display meaning you can see the colors brighter and better.
Overall, the resolution is pretty good on both the headsets and only if you wear these headsets one after the other you could tell the difference.
You are not going to put on one headset and feel the shortcoming but it is sure going to be evident when you compare these headsets.
Refresh Rate and Field Of View
The refresh rate on the Samsung Odyssey is around 90 Hz which is better than that of the Oculus Go which has a refresh rate of about 60-72 Hz.
The Samsung Odyssey has a record of giving no motion sickness in any game because of its refresh rate along with other features.
So, if you want a headset that comes with no motion sickness then this wired Mixed reality headset can easily be your pick.
On the other hand, even though the Oculus Go has a lower refresh rate, you would not feel motion sick in most of the games with the headset.
So, overall the refresh rate works well for both the VR headset but if you are particular about motion sickness then you should be more inclined towards the Samsung Odyssey.
The FOV of the Oculus Go is 101 degrees and that of the Samsung Odyssey is 110 degrees. If you are interested in getting a better Field of View then Odyssey is definitely the pick.
When it comes to the refresh rate and Field of View then Samsung Odyssey aces in both the aspects.
Tracking and Controllers
The Samsung Odyssey VR headset has an inside-out tracking so you do not need all the wires and mess as in the case of the Rift.
The inside-out tracking avoids any positional tracking camera that is needed to be installed in the case of both the Oculus Rift and the Vive.
It is worth mentioning that VR headsets like the HTC Vive have a room scale tracking so it does require more space, unlike the Samsung Odyssey Headset.
The Oculus Go also comes with the Inside out tracking making the entire setup wireless.
I think one of the major differences between the two headsets is that the Oculus Go is a complete standalone headset while the Samsung Odyssey does require a PC which we would discuss in the next section.
PC Specifications
the Odyssey you do require some powerful specs and newer versions of the GPU, so if you have the NVIDIA 1050 and above then you can go for this headset.
In order to know the details specs check out their official page here.
The Oculus Go, on the other hand, is a wireless headset so it does not require any PC or mobile phone to run the Virtual Reality world.
If you are going to use the Oculus Go then all you need to do is charge the battery and you are good for 2-3 hours of gameplay.
The battery life of the Oculus Go could be much better but as of now it is just 2-3 hours which is average and it does take some time to recharge again.
So, if you are in the middle of the game while on the Go and the battery dies down on you, you might have to wait for it to charge up all again in order to resume your game.
Games on the Samsung Odyssey and Oculus Go
Both the VR headsets are pretty good and even though the Oculus Go is a latecomer you can see some really good VR titles on this headset. They are almost the same as the Rift and a few from the Samsung Gear VR.
So if you are having any thoughts that there might not be enough content on the Oculus Go, then you do not have to worry as you can find thousands of games and apps that are compatible with the Go.
You can even play some adult games and watch some adult content on the Oculus Go. Since it is a standalone headset enjoying porn gets so much easier with the headset.
The games on Samsung Odyssey is pretty good as well, most of the titles are similar and you can play Steam games and Oculus games on them.
Overall, the content on a particular VR headset can be played across other platforms so you do get a lot of titles to play on both the headsets.
Conclusion
If you have a powerful PC and are okay with having a tethered VR headset, then the Samsung Odyssey is probably one of the best VR headsets that we can have out there.
The Samsung Odyssey is double the price of the Oculus Go, so if you are looking for something that would be an entry level VR experience then Oculus Go is the best.
You do not require any PC specifications and neither do you need any phone to run the Oculus Go as it is a standalone headset without the need for any wires or cameras needed to be attached.
The Samsung Odyssey, on the other hand, requires a particular set of PC specifications and if you have them then you can go for a more immersive experience in comparison to the Oculus Go.
The tracking on the Samsung Odyssey is amazing and overall, one can conclude that it really depends on what features you want to go for among the two VR headsets.
